Captivity
Elisha Cuthbert, so annoying as Jack’s bratty daughter in “24,” less irritating and less clothed in “The Girl Next Door,” stars this time as a famous model who is drugged, captured and tortured by a sick mind. Rated R for strong violence, torture, pervasive terror, grisly images, language and some sex. – Bill White
Eagle vs. Shark
Taika’s Waititi’s full-length feature debut is a disturbing film trying to disguise itself as a quirky romantic comedy. There are indeed some laugh-out-loud moments; unfortunately they’re aimed at, not with, the misfits who populate this offbeat New Zealand story. The most maddening aspect of the film is that the sweet, warmhearted Lily (Loren Horsley) continues to pursue, and take a back seat to, the dull, brooding, insensitive Jarrod (Jemaine Clement), even after he proclaims out loud that he’s a loser. Not romantically comical in the least. Rated R for language, some sexuality, and brief animated violence. HH – Teresa Budasi
